The Chronicles of Spellborn

The Chronicles of Spellborn

What?

From 2008 to 2009 I worked as a Level Artist/Environment Artist on the MMORPG The Chronicles of Spellborn, developed by the Dutch studio Spellborn NV and released on November 27, 2008, running on a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 2.

I mainly worked on the Exarchyon dungeon, as well as parts of the persistent world.

Exarchyon

Exarchyon is a 4 player instance dungeon set among a chain of jagged, rocky islands adrift within the magical Deadspell Storm. It acted as a hideout for one of the game’s factions, and the quest around it centered on a prison break. Players would arrive with their Shard Ship (a magical flying boat) at the docks and fight their way through various defenses on the path toward their final goal, after which they would have to fight their way back out.

There was even a trailer created as a showcase for it (in German though):

Persistent World

Other than the Exarchyon dungeon, I did a lot of work on the persistant world.

For example, this area in one of the main cities, around two of the High Houses.

The Game

Even though the game was received quite well, development on Spellborn sadly came to an end in mid-2009. If you want to know more about why that happened, here is a great video to watch:

A few years ago the community managed to resurrect the game, so if you want to play it, you can visit Spellborn Reborn.
