Kallax Board Game Storage System

Kallax Board Game Storage System

What?

When I stored my board games in the squares of my Kallax, I disliked stacking them horizontally on top of each other and then always needing the bottom one, and I hated storing them vertically and then having the components scrambled inside of the box.

So I came up with this shelving system I could print with my 3D printer.

If you want, you can download it on Printables, but I think that a few better alternatives have come along in the years after I made this.

Design Process

I tried to make it so the different steps accommodate the most common boardgame heights. Because it’s modular, it’s also supposed to work in each size of kallax (1/2/3/4/5 squares).

I wanted to get as much shelves out of the existing dividers, so I designed the length to match half a divider, so each divider gave me two shelves, while still being wide enough to support a boardgame.

Hacking the Kallax

These are actually a few Kallaxes cobbled together (the main part are two 5x5’s for example).

I often get asked how I did this to make them look seamless, and the “key” is that you (sadly) need to drop one column when you merge them together.

  • Use one 5x5 (or I guess 4x4) as-is, but remove one of the outer thicker boards (make sure its one of the two longer boards)
  • Take another 5x5 (or 4x4) and do the same, but this time remove the longer thick board on the other side.
  • Then cut one column length off both of the shorter thick boards of that same kallax. Just put one of the shorter inner dividers on with the dowels for a minute, and use that to mark the line you need to cut. (Make sure you cut on the correct side!)
  • Assemble both, then slide them together. Here you actually want to use the horizontal inner dividers in that space, and those are enough to hold both parts together (I made a bracket to secure them together, and which also hides the cut. But I guess you could also glue it, if you are sure you will never move it again).

Here’s a quick diagram:

I actually used the thicker boards I removed together with some other leftovers to create the double width section (where Wingspan and stuff is).
